I bought a ticket recently through Gate1.nl and though the prices are cheap, they make a lot of money misleading customers to buy tickets with hidden baggage costs. They put the icon and ¨no baggage included¨ notice in an illogical place and in small grey letters on the purchase screen and do not provide any information about the terms and conditions of the flight during the pre-purchase and purchase process (when you click on ¨flight information¨ you only get the itinerary). I understand that there can be cheaper tickets that do not include baggage, but I would like to make the decision conciously, rather than being made aware of the issue only once the ticket is purchased! Especially since this was for an intercontinental flight outside the US, so not on a route where carry-on only is common. In fact it is pretty much unheard of on this trajectory, except through Gate1.nl. Additionally, they do not issue the ticket right away, so I have my fingers crossed that it will be valid at all, and of course it makes it impossible to check with the airlines about the actual terms and conditions of the fare. Given that it would be so easy to make it more clear that baggage is not included (make the ¨no baggage¨ notification red rather than grey, make it more visible, have a statement during the purchase process that says clearly that the flight only allows hand luggage unless you pay for a luggage allowance, list the carry-on only status in flight infomration, etc), it seems clear to me that they inflate their profit margin by using the very cheap fares to bait people into buying tickets they might not have chosen were the conditions more clearly presented. I understand that in some circumstances and for some people this might not be important, but it is clear that their business model is to be misleading in order to increase sales.
